Irish Chamber Orchestra - Bach on the Road

The Irish Chamber Orchestra presents a feast of landmark works at Monkstown Parish Church, from the soaring pomp of Bach to the rhythmic elegance of Purcell's Fairy Queen.

Programme:
J.S. Bach | Brandenburg Concerto No. 3
C.P.E. Bach | Concerto for Cello in A minor
C.P.E. Bach | Symphony for Strings in B minor
Vivaldi | Concerto for 2 celli in G minor
Purcell | The Fairy Queen Suite No. 1

Conductor Peter Whelan champions music of the Baroque era in his ICO debut.  JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos are among the most perfect examples of the Baroque concerto. Few match No. 3’s tireless invention, colourful instrumentation, or virtuosity.

His son, CPE Bach’s popular Cello Concerto in A is a real gem. It offers cellist Christian Elliott plenty of clever challenges in the fast movements, while providing a slow movement of astonishing expressive intensity that transcends time, place, and stylistic formality. His Symphony in B minor is extremely Mozartian in style, full of unexpected harmonic turns.

Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 celli is performed by ICO cellists Christian Elliott and Aoife Nic Athlaoich. Its electrifying opening leaves one in no doubt of its highly charged emotional content. The slow movement breathes an autobiographical sadness, while its frenetic finale will have you on the edge of your seat. From the soaring pomp of Bach to the rhythmic elegance of the orchestral suite from Purcell’s Fairy Queen, the sound of the Baroque court provides a rich drawing board for this concert.

ICO continue to raise the bar for touring classical music in Ireland with their joyous playing, outstanding musicianship and sparkling personality.

"There is a taut vivacity to the playing of this orchestra that’s easily traced to the geniality of the group”  Irish Independent

Peter Whelan has a passion for baroque music and is in much demand as a director, bassoonist and musician.  He is the founder and Artistic Director of Ensemble Marsyas.    JS Bach is one of the greatest composers of the baroque era.  His son, CPE Bach blazed a mean trail as a composer, innovator and musical scholar, becoming more famous than his father in his lifetime.
