15-year-old Lara wants to become a ballerina. She auditions for a ballet school and when accepted, her family relocate to facilitate her attendance. Not only is Lara facing the rigors of ballet training and general adolescent turmoil, she is also dealing with the stress of other physical transitions…because Lara is a girl born in the body of a boy.
This directorial debut from Lukas Dhont is a moving and intense story of determination and understanding. Newcomer Victor Polster gives an astonishingly nuanced performance as Lara, whose punishing ballet practices and self imposed physical adaptations reflect her courage and resolve but also her frustration with her body and the impatience of wanting and waiting to to grow up.
