Tasmania, mid-1990s. Troubled young man Nitram (Caleb Landy Jones) lives with his parents - they love him but are unable to control his erratic behaviour. When Nitram meets local reclusive heiress Helen, he unexpectedly forms a connection with her. But tragedy strikes the pair, which leads Nitram down a dark and violent path that ultimately results in the 1996 Port Arthur mass shooting.

Acclaimed director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Snowtown) sensitively confronts this dark part of Australia’s recent history, avoiding any form of sensationalism by concentrating only on events leading up to the shooting and not showing the final violence on-screen. Landry Jones is riveting in the lead, but the supporting cast is also outstanding. The result is a tense, compelling and unflinching film.

Best Actor, Cannes Film Festival 2021
