On the Road

Dervla Murphy is one of the world's first women solo adventurers; she continues to travel the globe and remains passionate about politics, conservation, bicycling, and human rights.

It’s been twenty years since the publication of A Place Apart in which she recounts her experiences of cycling through Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles.

Despite her own family connections to the IRA, she travelled north largely unfettered by sectarian loyalties. Armed instead with an indefatigable curiosity, a fine ear for anecdote, an ability to stand her own at the bar, and a penetrating intelligence, she navigated her way through horrifying situations, and sometimes found herself among people stiff with hate and grief.

But equally, she discovered an unquenchable thirst for life and peace, a spirit that refused to die. We look forward to meeting her in the company of poet Grace Wells to hear about both women’s adventures and poems from Grace and Dervla’s views on the world as we find it now.
