Project Puppet

Children's Online Workshop

Project Puppet is an exciting new project that we'll be delivering as part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2020, in which Artists Maisie Lee and Fionnuala Gygax will guide children through the process of storytelling and puppet making.

Would you like to make something really special for someone you are missing? Join Fionnuala and Maisie and learn how to make your very own puppet show video.

In a series of four 10 to 12 minute video workshops, Fionnuala and Maisie will show you how to create and film a puppet play to send to your special someone. In four short workshops you will learn how to make your puppets using leftover materials in your house, how to create your very own story and how to make your puppets come to life!

The workshops will be available online from Tue 9 - Fri 12 June and we would love you to send us the recording of your puppet show. We might even put some of our favourites up on our website for everyone to see!

Workshop 1: Puppetmaking. An introduction from Maisie to ‘Project Puppet’, followed by puppet making with Fionnuala about using disused materials that can be found at home (recyclables, rubbish, disused objects in the house) to build puppets. Fionnuala will briefly show how to manipulate a puppet, but will explore this further in Video 2.

Video 2: Creating a Character. Maisie will ask some questions to get everyone thinking imaginatively about bringing their puppet characters to life. Fionnuala will answer some of Maisie’s questions as the puppets she has made.
Fionnuala will then discuss how to bring the puppets to life physically using voice, movement and emotion.

Video 3: Storytelling. Maisie and Fionnuala will provide prompts, questions and suggestions on how to come up with the story of the puppet plays. They will give a short example with one of the puppets made by Fionnuala.

Video 4: Performance. Maisie and Fionnuala will give suggestions and pointers on how best to perform and record the puppet plays, with a bit of help from our puppet friends! This will focus on the best way to tell your story and how you might be able to add to it by creating atmosphere through lighting, the set they choose to tell the story and adding music or sound effects.
