Romería
Acclaimed Spanish director Carla Simón once again brings her distinctive style to this intimate, intelligent and compelling drama. Romería – meaning “pilgrimage” – is the final film in Simón‘s semi-autobiographical trilogy, which includes Summer 1993 and Alcarràs, and explores themes of belonging, family history and memory.
18-year-old Marina lost both her parents when she was very young. Discovering that she needs the signature of her paternal grandparents for a scholarship application, she travels to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet the family she’s never known, unsure if she will be welcomed. As Marina encounters members of her extended family, she unravels the real story of her parents.
Another extraordinary and beautifully crafted piece of work from an instinctive filmmaker.
